Ethos

Editorial

Editorial integrity and diligence is central to Pallina Press. Each book goes through a careful and thorough editorial process before it reaches readers. Our editors believe in consideration of each symbol, line and space on the page. We invest time in developing a strong, collaborative relationship with our poets and truly engaging with their work line by line.

Diversity

Bringing the work of new and underrepresented writers to the page is integral to our raison d'etre. We do not approach diversity as an exercise in box-ticking, quotas, or meeting funding criteria. We are existentially invested, and care about developing and nurturing writers facing structural and institutional barriers to publishing. We offer free critiquing and manuscript development services to writers from underrepresented groups where possible.

Aesthetics

Our design takes inspiration from the city of Birmingham and, in particular, the treasure trove that is Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Old Masters, or our original logos and covers, we are passionate about our aesthetics and creating beautifully presented, high-quality artefacts for our readers and poets to treasure.

Lyric

Pallina Press is home to a varied breadth and style of verse. Be it the long lines, long form, mildly prosaic, formally inventive and unorthodox, radical or unruly, traditional and terse, our editors are looking for some semblance of musicality, magic and the spiritual charge of poetry in work. That which acts upon the reader as a poem, is a poem.

Regional

As a proud Midland-based publisher, Pallina Press amplifies and champions regional voices in a publishing industry that is caught between two frontiers: London and the North. We’re excited about the poetry and poetics of writers living and working in Britain today and, therefore, only take submissions from writers based in the UK and the Republic of Ireland; this is necessary to maintain the integrity of our particular editorial approach.

Daring

Pallina Press approaches publishing with a spirit of daring. We wish to create boldly and make books that excite us. We work with poets who exude a deep critical engagement with prosody and with the literary culture they find themselves in. We seek out the attuned, experimental and authentic; poetry to both please and provoke the editors, readers, poets and critics.

‘We are willing to take risks in order to foster ambitious prosody and provide space for the considered critical attention one must bring to the art of poetry.’
